Redecorating your kitchen can be a very expensive project, even if you are capable of doing a lot of the work yourself. If you learn how to paint kitchen cabinets yourself then you can refresh your kitchen and save a lot of money. This guide will show you exactly how you can repaint kitchen cabinets yourself.

Materials Needed:

Sand Paper
Screwdriver
Wood Filler
Paint
Door Hardware
Glaze (Optional)
Clear coat

Step 1 Removing Doors and Drawer Fronts

The first thing that you should do is remove the drawer fronts and cabinet doors in your kitchen. This can normally be done by using a screwdriver to loosen the hinges, and then removing the whole panel.

Step 2 Preparing the Surface

Next you will need to prepare the surface so that the new paint color has a good surface to stick to. To do this remove the old gloss finish by using some sand paper. De-glosser can also be used to speed up the process. Ideally you want to remove as much gloss as possible to allow the paint to stick firmly.

Any handles can be removed and if you are not using the same handles then the holes can be filled with wood filler. Allow the filler to dry and sand down again to make sure its perfectly level. Wash the door with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Put all of the doors on newspaper on a flat surface so that painting is as easy as possible.

Step 3 Painting

Once you have allowed the doors to dry after being washed its time to paint. Paint thin coats onto the doors to minimise any runs. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly in between coats. Also make sure that there is no dust in the room as this could stick to the surface of the paint and damage the effect.

Step 4 Paint the Frames

As well as painting the door fronts and cabinets, you will then need to paint the frames of the kitchen to finish the look. This should be sanded and washed in exactly the same way as with the doors. Take your time to remove as much of the gloss surface as possible.

Step 5 Adding Glaze

This is an optional step but will create a much more interesting finish for your kitchen cabinets. The glaze creates a wood grain effect and texture. Glaze should be applied according to the directions on the packet. Normally it should be wiped on the painted surface, and then some of it removed by being wiped off. If glaze is used then it needs to be left to dry for around 12 hours before adding the top coat.

Step 6 Top Clear Coat

To create a hard wearing surface which is easy to clean, apply the top clear coat to your kitchen. This will take 12 hours to dry, and then a further 24 hours before it should actually be used as your kitchen. When the top coat has fully hardened then it should be highly durable. This will make cleaning your kitchen easy and also mean that the kitchen will stay looking new for as long as possible.
